As the nights draw in and the temperatures drop, you might be dreaming of escaping to more exotic climes.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing break or an adventure steeped in history and culture, there are plenty of sun-filled holiday hotspots to explore during the UK winter.
Read on to discover four luxurious and affordable winter sun destinations and start planning your next holiday.
1. Egypt – A rich history and idyllic beaches
The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April when you’re guaranteed sunshine and warmth, but temperatures aren’t excessive – in August, Cairo sees average highs of 94°F!
If you love nothing more than relaxing on the beach with a good book and a cocktail in hand, Sharm el-Sheikh is a must. This stunning resort offers idyllic beaches, world-class diving, and countless luxury hotels.
On the other hand, if you’re eager to escape the crowds and seek out a more exclusive, tranquil location, you might want to explore Luxor. Located on the east bank of the Nile River in southern Egypt, the city is steeped in history, with multiple temples, ancient burial sites – such as the Valley of the Kings – and museums to explore.
Alternatively, take the opportunity to cross off a bucket-list item – treat yourself to a stay at the Four Seasons Hotel in Cairo or a boutique hotel in Giza and take a trip to the iconic pyramids.
2. South Africa – Outdoor adventures and world-class wineries
If you like your holidays to be hot and dry, head to South Africa between November and February when temperatures are typically a balmy 73°F to 79°F.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Cape Town packs a mighty punch. You’ll be spoilt for choice by the range of activities, wildlife, and landscapes there are to explore. Hike to Lion’s Head and enjoy the jaw-dropping views of Table Mountain, take a drive through Buffelsfontein Game Reserve, or enjoy a stroll along Dolphin Beach.
The city itself is filled with cafes, street markets, and a host of five-star hotels. For a truly luxurious experience, opt for a stay on the beautiful V & A Waterfront.
Beyond Cape Town, the dry season is a great time to tour the Cape Winelands, which includes the popular wine-making towns of Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, and Paarl.
For a more off-the-beaten-track experience, you might want to hire a car and drive along the incredibly scenic Route 62, stopping off en route at less well-known wineries.
3. Mexico – Stunning coastal resorts and colourful parades
During the UK’s cold, dark, and wet winter months of December to April, Mexico typically enjoys warm and sunny days with less rain than at other times of the year.
This dry season is an ideal time for a winter sun break at one of the many stunning coastal resorts offering spectacular beaches and calm, turquoise waters. Some of the most luxurious destinations include Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, and the Mayan Riviera.
Mexico City, with its world-class museums, galleries, and opulent hotels, is also well worth a visit. You might want to time your visit to coincide with the impressive nationwide parties that take place each year as part of Carnaval. These celebrations are known for their colourful parades, lively music, and energetic dances.
4. The Maldives – A paradise of relaxation and island hopping
The Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is a fantastic holiday destination at any time of the year. But, the dry season, which runs from December to April, is the most popular time to visit.
While this holiday hotspot is best known for its striking beaches and crystal-clear waters, there’s more to the Maldives than sun, sea, and sand.
Of course, if you’re happy to lie back, relax, and top up your tan, you won’t be disappointed. The white sand beaches are pristine and in December, temperatures range from 82°F to 89°F.
For those seeking a slightly more active trip, island hopping is a popular way to while away the days.
You could explore independently by taking the public ferries that connect the inhabited islands. Alternatively, charter your own “safari boat” and experience the unspoiled beauty of the uninhabited islands.
Don’t forget to make time for a trip to the capital, Malé. There’s a national museum to explore, sightseeing tours, dolphin-watching excursions, and plenty more to see and do. You might like to hire a snorkel and explore the incredible coral reefs that are home to a dazzling array of colourful fishes, sea turtles, and manta rays.
However you choose to spend your time in the Maldives, you’re practically guaranteed an unforgettable winter sun holiday.
